iOS 14 Tip & tricks (Full)
iOS 14 is the latest version of Apple’s operating system. It powers the world’s favourite device: the iPhone. iOS simply stands for “iPhone operating system”, and version 14, the newest iOS, was released on September 16, 2020.The most obvious changes in this iOS update can be found in the Home Screen (more on that later), but there are also some entirely new features. Some of these additions include Apple’s new translation App, the ability to swap default Apps, and (finally!) support for widgets. There have been an impressive number of tweaks and changes under the hood as well, including some that even the most die-hard of Apple fans may not be aware of. Read on to find out more…
The Home Screen By now, we all know and love Apple’s approach to displaying Apps. But to tell the truth, even we have to admit that the grid-layout has become rather stale. Rows and rows of uniform, uninspired icons have been the norm since the very first iteration of iOS way back in 2007. iOS4 introduced a bit of customization with folders, but that was 10 versions ago!If you decide to utilize all of iOS 14’s new features, your Home Screen will be unrecognizable.
App Library If you have used android phones at all you will likely have come across the “App Drawer”. This is a place where all of the Apps installed on the phone are listed in alphabetical order, which makes finding what you need pretty easy. With iOS 14, Apple has taken inspiration from its younger brother and introduced its own App Library. Previously, holding your finger on an App’s icon would only allow you to either hide it in a folder or remove it from your device entirely. With iOS 14, you now have the option of moving your Apps into the App Library. A definite win. The App Library helps you cut down clutter by removing less-used Apps from your Home Screen. But this isn’t the only way to clean up your interface.
Declutter your Home Screens If you are like us, you probably have tens or even hundreds of Apps that get varying amounts of use. Searching through all of these to find the one you need can be a pain. Luckily, Apple have you covered. As well as the App Drawer, another great feature of iOS 14 is that you can now hide entire pages from your home screen! Simply hold a long press and boom, you can untick the home screens you don’t use to hide them from view. This cleaner look ties in with Apple’s stripped-back aesthetic. It feels like a big step forward, especially for a company that has traditionally shied away from too much customization. Apps aren’t the only part of iOS 14 that have been given a minimalist makeover. Incoming phone calls, FaceTime calls, and Siri all have a much more compact form factor in the newest iOS update. This means that you can keep using your iPhone to browse the web, check emails, and even watch videos whilst taking a call. After you’ve stripped down your Home Screen to the really useful Apps, the only question becomes what to do with all of the digital real-estate you’re left with? Don’t worry, Apple has your back there too…
Widgets For many years, Apple users who craved widgets could do little more than look on enviously at the Android fans. Thankfully, this state of widget-envy is no longer necessary! iOS 14 has, finally, added support for widgets.Put simply, a widget is an App that runs within the Home Screen, so you can access its functionality without having to first open it. At present, the majority of widgets you can get on iOS 14 are native Apple Apps such as Files, Maps, Music, etc. However, some third-party Apps have widget functionality, and you can expect to see many more added over the coming weeks and months as developers catch up.With iOS 14 you can move your widgets however you see fit (including resizing them). If you prefer a more hands-off approach, Apple has an incredibly smart and convenient feature up its sleeve: Smart Stack. Smart Stack is a new feature that employs intelligent learning algorithms to streamline your widget experience. With Smart Stack, you can store a bunch of widgets in the same screen space. iOS 14 uses a combination of data points to deliver the right widget to the top of your stack based on location, time of day, and activity.
App Clips Through some impressive technological wizardry, iOS 14 allows you to use certain features of specific Apps without downloading the entire application. With App Clips, you can perform tasks such as renting an e-bike, buying something from a cafe, or reserving a spot at your favorite eatery in seconds. Simply scan a QR code, NFC tag, or use a proprietary App Clip Code and you are away! With App Clips, you can access the functionality of many Apps in an instant.
An Update to Messages An excellent feature that you may not have even realized you wanted has been included in iOS 14’s version of Messages. For the first time, Apple users have the ability to pin conversations so that they stay at the top of the App. If you’re used to losing track of conversations in the depths of your busy inbox, pinning a message is as simple as a rightwards swipe on any chat. As well as pinning, Messages now has an inline reply and a mentions feature, much like you might find in Whatsapp and other messaging services. These two features combined should make it that bit easier for you to stay on top of active group conversations.
Health App updates In a move that will delight not only fitness junkies, but anyone who cares about their health, Apple’s Health App now comes with a sleep tracker! As well as this, the new Health Checklist offers a collated location for all your health and safety tools, such as Fall Detection, Emergency SOS, and even new Apps such as one that gives you insights into how audio levels can affect your hearing health.
Translation for all Douglas Adams’ famous work of comedic science fiction, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, introduced the world to the concept of the Babelfish. In Adam’s universe, communication between races is overcome not through technological means, but rather by inserting a tiny aquatic creature called a Babelfish into your ear canal. Once inserted, the Babel fish then does the hard work of translating every alien tongue imaginable into the language of the creature whose ear it resides in.iOS 14 brings with it Apple’s new Translate App, and whilst it might not be able to translate inter-galactic communications (yet…), it is truly something to behold. Plus, it has the edge over the Babelfish in that it works without you needing to put an actual fish inside your head. Apple’s Translate can process and convert to and from 11 different languages in near real-time. So what differentiates it from other translation services out there? Well, once Siri has recognized the two languages being spoken, it can translate between them on the fly, without the need for any further input. And the best part? It can even work offline, as long as you’ve downloaded your chosen language in advance!
Other Tips and Tricks for iOS 14 iOS 14 comes jam-packed with new tools and features. Some of them are not as easy to find as others, so here are some tips and tricks to help you get the most out of the new iOS.
PiP PiP (picture-in-picture) mode allows you to watch a video while you are doing other tasks on your iPhone. PiP is enabled by default, and right now it works with Apple’s home Apps, such as Safari, Facetime, iTunes etc.If you have a video playing and either swipe up or (on older devices) hit the home button, PiP mode will be enabled. The YouTube App doesn’t support PiP, but you can still watch YouTube videos with PiP using a neat little hack. Although YouTube doesn’t technically support PiP, Safari does, so simply navigate to your video of choice on YouTube using Safari, view in full-screen mode and tap the PiP button at the top of the screen. You’re welcome!
YouTube in 4K Apple has finally added support for Google’s VP9 codec, which means you can now enjoy your favorite videos on YouTube in glorious 4K. Simply choose the 2160p option from the Quality menu while watching.
Sleep Mode Few things are more infuriating than being woken up by a notification on your phone that really, really could have waited until the morning. If you have a predictable sleeping schedule, simply input the details of your sleeping hours into the Health App. It’ll automatically switch to Do Not Disturb mode during that time.
Wind Down A companion to Sleep Mode and Sleep Schedule, Wind Down activates Sleep Mode at a set time before you retire to bed. Wind Down not only reduces distractions, it also adds Apps and shortcuts to the lock screen that can help you relax.
Final Thoughts on iOS 14 iOS 14 brings with it not only some highly sought-after functions, such as PiP video, a sleep tracker, and (finally!) widgets, but also a large number of less obvious tweaks and improvements. One of the best things about iOS 14 is that you won’t necessarily have to fork over cash for the latest model of iPhone to enjoy its improvements. Devices as old as the iPhone 6s (released in 2015) are supported by this new iOS release, so the majority of Apple users will be able to enjoy many of iOS 14’s upgrades. What are your favorite aspects of Apple’s latest operating system? Irregulars part 6
“Greetings cadets, I trust you have recovered somewhat from last session, today we shall be covering the rapid mobilisation of Irregulars during an incursion by, Etrantill supplied and backed pirate groups. This incursion was shortly after the first trade convey incident that we have previously reviewed and as far as we know as done with the intent of learning more about the humans military capabilities. From recovered data and captives we know that the first stage of the plan was to secure a low population planet to act as a base to raid from, this is what we shall be reviewing today”.
The holo screen opened and began playback of the recording, it showed a human with a microphone in one hand talking to a camera, in the back ground large tracked vehicles painted bright red could be seen, some looked damaged with holes in the armour and black scorching breaking the uniform red. Each had a turret with two barrels and some had humans riding on them, then came an even larger vehicle, it looked like a scaled up version of the first one, notable the missiles mounted on the back of the turret were not the red of the rest of the vehicle.
“As you can see most of the Soviet armour made it back to base, though not without damage, as per the rules it will have to be parked up as is for the duration of the intermission, after a safety check to make sure none of them explode randomly”. The human facing the camera was speaking to the camera while waving at the vehicles with his free hand, before turning to look at something of camera.
“Ah, Comrade General , would you mind telling us how you feel that last engagement went for you?” The camera turned and settled on a human in a dark blue uniform with gold epilates on the shoulders with red edging, on each of them was a gold star and a sickle crossed over by a hammer, from off camera you could see the microphone being reached in for them to speak into.
“It went fairly well, the capitalist pigs were pushed back to their base and had it not been for the odd decision by their commander to build cruisers that he can only use for close base fire support I would have crushed them completely”.
“Indeed that was an odd choice, are you sure though, I did see a lot of turrets”, the feed cut to a screen with the human governments insignia on it, below that was another, smaller insignia and then the words ‘Emergency broadcast system’, then it cut to a human women sitting behind a desk.
“This is governed Franklin, a few minutes ago ships transitioned from FTL at the edge of the planets gravity well and opened fire on our orbital satellites and station, they have also sent landing craft towards the plains north of the capital, at this time Overlord protocols are in effect, all civilians should head to their nearest shelter, all reserves are to report for mobilisation, all Irregulars are to mobilise”.
The feed cut back to show the human in the uniform having already turned away from the camera and looked to be shouting orders but they couldn’t be made out. The other human with the microphone moved into view and spoke.
“Cut the feed and go to local storage only”, he then walked away, the camera following as they headed towards a building, again it was painted in that red colour. The footage then jumped forward to show them inside what looked to me a Command and control centre, though it looked archaic but at the same time they watched as holo screens started to pop into existence, the centre table that had shown a screen with a top down, two dimensional view of what looked like the base they were in expanded into a three dimensional hologram, looking much more like the ground strategy interfaces they were used to.
“Have we got the template unlocks yet?”
“Just came through, unlocking now”.
“Fabricator limits are off, full capacity on the fabricators is now available”.
“Send all the damaged tanks for recycling, queue up replacement ammunition for all the undamaged tanks. Get the airfields to get the MIGS up and running, fab up recon packages for them first”.
“Allied Commander on channel six”.
The voices died down as one of the screens shifted to display a human female in a blue uniform, an insignia of a golden bird on silver background within a gold triangle behind them. They handed off a brown folder to someone off screen.
“So we have some party crashers I see, looks like they are coming down to your north, I have a group of Longbows to your east that I was planning on flanking you with, if you can fab up the pads to rearm and refuel them they can be with you in ten”.
“Will do, any idea what we are facing?”
“According to the sat images we got before it go blasted all the ships look to be Etrantill designs, I would assume the ground equipment is the same”.
“Well that’s not too bad. They don’t put shields on ground armour, though going to have to refab all the armour as the default won’t hold up to plasma weapons”.
“Well you gave me a head start on that, I have the cruisers being loaded with new ammo but until I get their turrets changed out I can land the shells only about 20 meters past your north wall.”
“Sir, I have just pulled the specs for Etrantill power armour, its got almost no protection against high volt A/C currents”.
The human male gave a smile, and then tapped a few of the controls for the main display, it added a tall pole with a white ball on the top and three rings with the top one being the smallest and the bottom the largest to the display and this was then placed every few meters behind the north wall.
“Tell the barracks I want everyone who is certified kitted in unlocked Telsa Trooper armour”, they turned back to the screen.
“I’ll focus on getting Mammoths and Tesla tanks up, if you can get lights and artillery that would be appreciated”.
“Already on it, I have ten APC’s heading your way, after they drop my Tanya and infantry I’ll get them running supplies of ammo up to you, make sure to send me a list of what you need”.
With that the screen cut back to its hold display.
The footage skipped forward again, the camera now back outside, standing atop the wall with the large tanks from before lined up in front of the wall, interspaced with an odd looking tank that have smaller versions of the tall pole seen earlier. At the top of the screen was a large cloud of dust, the kind kicked up by a large group moving. From behind the camera came 24 helicopters in bright blue, each heading towards the approaching cloud. At about half why there they began to unleash missiles, anti-air fire and point defence coming from the cloud in return. The blue helicopters wove between the fire with surprising ease, turning in the direction of the enemy only long enough to fire a missile and then turning away. Then the broke off and pulled away hard, returning towards the camera’s view point, the last one to turn away took a hit to its tail and began to spin wildly. The pilot ejected and just after the parachute deployed a plasma round arched into the air and vaporized them.
The cadets could feel the tension after what they had just seen, having all had to read the human rules of warfare they knew that what they had just seen was a rather large error on the part of the attackers. Then came the thunder, the sound was muffled, the recording having had its volume turned down but even then it gave enough of a bang to make a few of the more audio sensitive cadets wince in pain.
From behind the camera came a barrage of shells, high arcs passing over and towards the incoming enemy, it was quickly notice however that they were going to fall short. Indeed the first shells landed a good way ahead of the approaching hover vehicles, a mix of infantry transports towards the rear with tanks at the front. The shells detonated not to a thunderous explosion but a cloud of smoke that seemed to sparkle, with what it turned out were small rectangles of metal mixed in. More and more shells landed, creating a thick bank of smoke between the two forces. Once the cloud had been thoroughly established the fire stopped, it was then the smaller human tanks with the odd looking weapons moved forward, coming alongside them were small infantry in odd looing armour, with a doomed head section and one arm ending in an integrated weapon of some sort.
The human tanks and infantry moved to form a long line in front of the smoke cloud, the infantry raising their arm with the weapon to point into the smoke, in the smoke vague shapes could be seen, the slowly moving forms of hover tanks and infantry, it was then that more shells were fired from the artillery behind the human line. These shells burst in the air above, shaped charges blowing the mixture inside down into the existing cloud, replacing what had been dissipated.
It was then the turn of the visual acute cadets to wince, there was the clear sound of electrically current, the rings on the tanks flashed blue, going from front to back, behind the camera the same was happening on the towers and the integrated weapons on the infantry glowed bright as well. The lances of blue/white electric current jumped towards the cloud and when you pump a stupid amount of A/C current into a cloud of ionized smoke filled with shards of metal, a large number of which were pressed to the armour of the infantry inside or in mid-air, part in and part out of the shields on the tanks, well you get a very bright flash.
Inside the could arcs of electricity jumped all over the place, from shard to shard to armour of a tank, into the armour of the infantry through a shard pressed to it that was thicker than the integrated shields. Tank drives overloaded, dropping them to the ground, articulation servos in armour joins were fried, locking the armour up and trapping the person inside, assuming the inner lining had held and they hadn’t been electrocuted to death.
The Mammoth tanks rolled forward as the Tesla Tanks and Troopers fell back, some at the back of the formation that had not been in the cloud or where the current had dropped off enough to not take them out completely began to fire. This was meet with the thunder of the human guns, each pair firing in quick succession, the human shells having been swapped out to low yield anti-matter rounds. Each one detonated with a blue flash, the shields of the hover tanks giving out after only a couple of hits each and the light armour failing to even hold up to a single hit. In contrast the armour of the human tanks didn’t seem to notice the particle cannon fire being sent at it in return, only the spots of black where it had scorched the red paint giving any sign the human tanks had been hit.
From the sides came much smaller, blue painted tanks, each mounting a single gun in a round turret, these were much faster than the red behemoths. They passed around the outside of the main fight, putting rounds into the enemy as they passed before turning their attention to the fleeing transports ahead, they would pursue them out of sight, flashes of anti-matter detonations being seen on the horizon for a short time afterwards.
The footage ended there and the instructor turned to the cadets, while taping his controls to bring up the image of a shell, on the side in the human script it said ‘Ionized Smoke-Thick Chaff Variable Fused’.
“So this is what the human deployed in this fight, it is a very simple technology, using ionized smoke with metal shards to both block line of sight and scramble most forms of sensors used in ground combat. It also has another effect, as you should all know any shield used on ground based or low flight only vehicles and infantry armour has to be kinetically sensitive, if it wasn’t then impact with any object, contact with the ground or just holding an external weapon would cause strain on the shield. This as you saw has a major vulnerability, if an object is part way through the shield then it causes a gap in the shield, this is normally blocked entirely by the object making the gap but when that object is conductive to electricity it allows the shields to be penetrated”.
He tapped a few keys and an CGI rendition showing a hover tank with a lump of metal half through its shields, then a line of current jumping into the exposed end of the pole, travelling along it and then jumping from the inside end to the armour of the tank which then conducted it around until it reached an exposed area that couldn’t deal with that level of current, such as the hover engines external components.
“When this footage came to light the Conglomerate instituted a new design requirement for all ground armour and vehicles to have a non-conductive outer layer and tripled the internal insulation requirements. That’s all for today, please refer to the files I have listed in regards to the factions; Allies-C&C, Soviet Union-C&C, GDI and Brotherhood of Nod”.
