AutoCAD 2021 and Microsoft OneDrive
Hello everyone, I "think" this is the correct subreddit for this question. I tried searching and did not find much so we'll see.
I work for smaller construction company. We do not have much in terms of office network infrastructure. No file server, no VPN, nothing like that. Pretty much everyone works on laptops and we are mobile all over the country. In the past we have used OneDrive for pretty much all of our dealings as a company, basically using it as our cloud based file server. And because it was mostly used for PDF's, word docs, and spreadsheets this was never a problem.
Now we are utilizing AutoCAD on a more frequent basis as many design firms that we work with are moving towards electronic drawing packages and requesting dwg files with as built info at the end of the project. As we grow we are adding more drafters and using OneDrive as our means of file storage is becoming a burden.
Previously our workflow has been one person working on a single file and just saving it to a folder in OneDrive when they were done with it. Now that we have multiple people working on various files we have run into issues where one person will open a file and start working on it, and while they have it open, someone in the field or even in the next office over may open the same file to pull a dimension or whatever. Unlike a traditional file server, OneDrive does not sync the dwl files when a drawing is open (at least I don't think it does) therefore the second person to open the same file is not notified that the drawing is in use by another. I'm sure you can see how this can be disastrous if left unchecked.
I'll be the first to tell you that I am not the biggest fan of onedrive or any cloud based services for this type of data. However, it's what I have to work with, and I do not see the company investing thousands upon thousands into servers and network equipment to remedy an issue that barely exist (yet).
I come here asking if anyone else has experience in this situation, and what solutions you have implemented or found to be useful. I am willing to investigate other cloud solutions like dropbox, etc. Or even the Autodesk versions like a360 or Drive but it seems like AutoDesk can't make up their minds on those so I would rather not personally.
