I have issues and concerns I'd like to get answers on, but first I think it would be best to talk about my Mac Book Pro and prior issues with my windows partition that is leading me to this full switch from both OSX and Windows.
Mac Book Pro Specks from the System Information and Disk Utility: * Processor
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo * Memory
4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 * Graphics
NVIDIA GeForce 320M 256 MB * Software
Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63) I have 10 updates available since I last used osx almost a year and a half ago, according to system information. * HHD
250.06 GB Hitachi HTS545, according to disk utility.
Windows has Failed on me three times since I started using it about a year and a half ago, all three within the last two months or so (most recently saturday the 17th), due to some .dll file causing a blue-screen on startup or shortly after login. I want a fresh start on linux due to frustration at OSX and Windows as well as being ideologically intrigued by the idea of Open Source Software. Pre-Installation Issues and Concerns
I downloaded the 14.04 desktop .iso from the Ubuntu site and followed the "BurningIsoHowto"
guide just to make sure I did it right. I checked the MD5 and it is correct but each time I try to burn it, it fails. If I double click the iso, its on my desktop, It says it cannot be opened due to "no mountable file systems." I also noticed that the main download page on site gave me the AMD build and I have an Intel processor, clicking around the Ubuntu site I found the intel build on the Releases page for 14.04
. Since the only thing I really know about this is the brand names are different, I would like to know what the difference is in the two images and why I can't seem to burn the AMD image to a blank dvd in disk utility. I stopped everything until can figure this out. Concernes about the Trackpad and other such Built-in Features
On partition, bootcamp gives you the option to download the latest graphics drivers and other files that enable the keyboard backlight, trackpad, webcam, brightness and volume buttons. I read a few threads on this sub (3 years old
, 2 years old
and day old
) and know that getting my iPod touch to work is going to be a pain in my ass, also that a program called Cinnamon might solve any trackpad woes. Those two aside, what about the other built in functions, can I expect them to work or do I have to go in search of fixes or live without them?
I know this is a bit of a wall of text but I tried to get as much information about the my system, issues and concerns as I could understand of them so someone more knowledgeable can hopefully help. Thanks for your time.
